A community partnership based in Fylde has been awarded national recognition for its work in addressing underage drinking and youth anti-social behaviour.

Fylde Community Alcohol Partnership was commended for its collaborative, community-focused approach which has had a real impact on the local community.

The partnership was named CAP of the Year (England) by Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP) at its annual awards ceremony in the Houses of Parliament on 02 April 2025. CAP is a national organisation that sets up and supports local partnerships that aim to reduce alcohol harm in children and young people, improve their health and well-being and enhance their communities.

Since its launch Fylde CAP has brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including Council teams, Trading Standards, Police, local high schools, charities, housing groups, and youth organisations, to address a worrying trend of increased underage drinking and risky behaviour among local youth.

Its award-winning strategy began with a targeted mentorship programme in local schools, reaching disengaged students on the verge of expulsion. Combining theory sessions on topics like communication, conflict resolution, and life skills with physical activity, the programme highlighted the risks associated with underage drinking and its impact on decision-making.

Crucially, Fylde CAP linked this school-based programme with community outreach, building trust with hard-to-reach young people. By connecting them with volunteer opportunities, targeted youth projects, and sports clubs, the partnership provided positive alternatives and reduced opportunities for risky behaviour.

The success of the school's mentorship programme has been so profound that schools have requested its continuation, citing improved student engagement and attendance. The partnership has also facilitated test purchases on businesses reported for underage alcohol sales, further reducing access to alcohol for young people.

Andrew Snowden, MP for Fylde, commented:

“Fylde CAP proves that real change happens when communities come together. Their innovative approach is not just reducing underage drinking—it’s transforming young lives and strengthening the community for the future.

“I am really pleased they have won this national award which puts Fylde on the map for the right reasons.”

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, commented: “I extend my congratulations to everyone involved in this exceptional initiative. Their dedication and innovative approach have made a tangible difference in our community. This achievement validates our partnership’s strategy in addressing underage drinking while improving the health and wellbeing of our young people through constructive engagement and education.”

Kate Winstanley, Director of CAP commented: “Fylde CAP’s success demonstrates the power of collaborative, community-driven solutions. Their innovative approach to engaging young people and addressing the root causes of anti-social behaviour and underage drinking has made a real difference in the lives of local residents. This award is a testament to their dedication and hard work.”

The Fylde CAP model has proven so effective that the council has now introduced a dedicated anti-social behaviour role, ensuring continued collaboration and a joined-up approach to tackling these issues in the long term.
