The CAP received the award at an event at Westminster on June 27.

The partnership was praised for the work it has done to engage young people and parents in the local area.Some of the activities it has organised include:

• Beat managers from Great Yarmouth Police held assemblies for various year groups in school on underage drinking and the effects. They also attended Colleges and set up stand with literature, which gave a great opportunity to gain knowledge from young people.
• The team attended licensed premises of concern with packs containing resources for challenge 25 and providing them with the appropriate words of advice around alcohol and proxy sales.
• An evening of engagement was held with YAB (Youth advisory board) marking alcohol with in local off-licenses. This gave the CAP the opportunity to track alcohol within the community once sold and awakening the social conscience of the licensees.

The Great Yarmouth Community Alcohol Partnership play a vital role in our community and it is right that they receive this award not only as a testament to all their hard work, but also as a measure of the success they have achieved in their ongoing partnership with Gorleston and Bradwell CAP.

“The CAP’s commitment to providing alcohol awareness and understanding, means that they have been able to engage with young people locally both out in the community and in schools and colleges, holding a variety of events to ensure that our youth are aware of the effects alcohols can have on them and their health. It is wonderful that the Great Yarmouth CAP have been recognised at a national level and I would like to offer each and every team member my congratulations for the role they have played in securing the CAP+ of the Year Award.”

Sgt Dan Smith from Norfolk Police and Co-Ordinator of the CAP comments:

“Building on the partnerships we have forged over the past decade the Great Yarmouth CAP have embraced the one team ethos creating a stronger than ever partnership including the sister Gorleston CAP. This has produced a year of multi-agency work which has been both enjoyable and productive, and has involved the largest amounts of partners and police officers to date. This approach has ensured a consistent message across the district and ensures the CAP principles are as far reaching as possible."

About CAP

There are currently over 250 CAP partnerships in England, Scotland and Wales They bring together local stakeholders with a shared interest in preventing underage drinking and encouraging responsible drinking among young adults. CAP partnerships are made up of retailers, local authorities, police, schools, neighbourhood groups and health providers, working together to protect young people from alcohol harm.

CAP’s annual report, launched at the event, shows how this innovative partnership approach has led to significant reductions to children’s and young people’s drinking, anti-social behaviour and underage sales in areas where it has created local partnerships.

Nationally, CAP evaluations show:

• 64% reduction in weekly drinking for 13-16 year olds
• After CAP training, 98% of retailers passed a Challenge 25 compliance test – from an average baseline of 52%
• 42% reduction in anti-social behaviour
• 40% reduction in residents reporting children and young people drinking in public places to be a very big or fairly big problem

CAP Director Kate Winstanley says:

“I’m delighted that in CAP areas around the country we are seeing such sustained reductions in regular drinking and anti-social behaviour among young people. CAPs are having a significant impact on reducing children’s alcohol consumption, improving their health and wellbeing and enhancing the communities where they live.”
