In response to the Social Mobility Commission's Report on Childhood Origins of Social Mobility published on 09 October 2024, Kate Winstanley, Director of CAP comments:

The Social Mobility Commission's 'Childhood Origins of Social Mobility' Report highlights important issues around vaping, drinking and drug use, particularly among more affluent families.

At Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP), we recognise that parental supply of alcohol is a significant factor contributing to underage drinking. Through our work with communities across the UK, we've seen first-hand the need for better education and awareness among parents about the risks associated with providing alcohol to under 18s.

Many parents believe that if they are too strict about drinking alcohol their children will rebel and drink to excess. This is not true. Teenagers who consider their parents to be permissive are much more likely to binge drink. When parents don’t allow their children (aged 11-15) to drink, 89% choose not to drink.

Addressing these attitudes is key to creating safer, healthier environments for young people because ensuring alcohol-free childhoods is a must.
