West Berkshire Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) has been awarded a Spotlight Award by Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP) for its exceptional and adaptive approach to youth education, particularly its ground breaking 16-plus programme developed in collaboration with Newbury College.
The award was presented at CAP's annual awards ceremony in the House of Commons on April 2025 and recognised the partnership's outstanding contribution to reducing alcohol-related harm and promoting informed choices among young people.
CAP is a national organisation that brings together local partnerships to minimise alcohol-related harm in young people, improve their health and well-being, and enhance their communities. The Spotlight Award celebrates CAPs that have demonstrated innovative and impactful approaches to addressing these issues.
The CAP's approach has significantly benefited over 500 young people at Newbury College through various events and initiatives. This year began with crucial discussions on alcohol misuse and other risky behaviours, setting the stage for informed conversations that resonate with the students.
Key achievements include:
- 16+ programme development: A new programme was created in collaboration with Newbury College to engage students about risky behaviours.
- Resource distribution: CAP resources, including posters and online materials, were made available across the college intranet, providing students with easy access to local support services.
- Young Health Champions Programme: The CAP supported 23 learners in completing the Young Health Champions programme, preparing them to deliver health education in local schools.
- Inaugural Freshers’ Fair: The fair attracted over 300 new students, providing them with access to information on volunteering, career opportunities, cybercrime, alcohol, mental health, and gender-based violence.
Lee Hunt, Deputy Principal (Vice Principal FE and Curriculum), Newbury College, commented:
"We are delighted to have welcomed CAP to the College and enabled our students to engage in meaningful and constructive discussions about alcohol safety. Connecting with expert community partners is vital for our young people, and the Spotlight Award highlights both the impact and value these connections provide. We look forward to continuing the collaboration and seeing the benefits for society."
"The partnership between West Berkshire CAP and Newbury College is a shining example of how educational institutions and community organisations can work together to create positive change," said Kate Winstanley, Director of CAP. "Their innovative approach and dedication to youth education make them a worthy recipient of this Spotlight Award."
The CAP's efforts have also resulted in significant improvements in compliance rates during test purchasing exercises, reflecting the effectiveness of its initiatives in promoting responsible retail practices.
